Mom asked me recently for the recipe for Chow Mein. I have this recipe which is titled "Mom's Chow Mein" (in Mom's handwriting) and read it off to her. Of course she argued with me and said that wasn't right. She then told me that when she went to the market they didn't have certain ingredients (i.e. bean sprouts). She said that Key Food doesn't have an International aisle anymore. I know that her eyesight is failing and that she just didn't recognize the can. So today I went to my supermarket and got her the bean sprouts, a can of mushrooms, a package of Lipton's Terrayki rice (they were out of fried rice), and some noodles. Bought the same for myself, and some boneless pork, so guess what Wheezie is having for dinner tonight?

The chinese food place that we would go to (rarely) was the place on the Concourse and E 198th Street -- and that place is apparently a front for a drug operation now...

Mom's Chow Mein was great!!!
However I did skip the soup and egg roll. Too lazy to go out again and the delivery is a $10 minimum.

I remember when I thought Chicken Chow Mein WAS Chinese food. Never would try anything else and mom always had it too. My dad would try other stuff but not mom and I. Don't recall if Helen and Jimmy ever tried anything else. Of course, we would have the "take out" stuff mostly when dad was working at Yonkers' Raceway because mother really hated to cook!!

I prefer the Lou Mein. The fried rice selections are good also.

Daddy worked there for many years. He was in the Club House and was a bartender. He worked for Stevens Corp. My uncle Danny Hickey also worked for Stevens but I am not sure if he was in the club house or elsewhere. I know daddy was there at least from 1958 until probably when he passed away in 1975. My dad was Jimmy Colleton and knew lots' of people there. One of his best friends was Ben Greenberg but again, I am not sure where at Yonkers Benny worked.

My son's father in law works at Yonkers raceway. He checks the horses urine for drugs. What a "YUCK" job. It must be difficult to get a horse to pee in a cup. For some strange reason I can't drink white wine at their house. LOL ;D
